It is difficult to understand the significance of a building by merely looking at it. Sure, if it is a church or a cathedral or a museum…but common folks who have no background on architecture will have a little bit of trouble trying to see into the significance of a building until it was spelled out plainly for them. For people who want to discover special features of buildings in Tampa Bay will have something new coming at them because AIA Tampa Bay will be rolling out their self-guided tours to attract more tourists and draw attention to the uniqueness of the buildings there.
The hour-long tour will begin at Lykes Gaslight Square Park. Lykes Gaslight is an extensive park with facilities like ball fields, computer labs, pier, playground, trails, gym, tennis court, dog park, canoe launch, picnic spots and many more. So, come early if you want to explore the park before the tour begins at noon on October 5, 2012. It is free to participate in the event, for your information, because AIA had earlier been granted a grant from the Florida Department of State’s Division of Historical Resources. It also got the thumbs up and green light from the Tampa Downtown Partnership program.
Anyway, for the rest of us who are unable to attend the tour, it was in the news that the organizers of the tour will take visitors and participants around to 5 or 6 other architecturally significant buildings that contributed, in one way or the other, to the city’s beauty and importance.
AIA have recently gotten down and dirty creating unique QR Codes that will be placed on location to help tourists and participants learn more about a particular building. While the tour will be more or less a guided one, I would consider this tour a half-self-guided one because of the fact that instead of having a tour guide explain the details and historical value of a place, they have decided to use a QR Code instead. Visitors who are interested can scan and bookmark the QR Code for later reading or they can read it right there and then.
If you asking why AIA is organizing such a tour at such a time, it is because the Tampa Bay Chapter of the American Institute of Architects is going to be held in October too, so this event is held in conjunction with the fest to give people a deeper look into what Tampa Bay, as a culture-rich city, has to offer.
Visitors who are keen on scanning the QR Codes on location when they are there are encouraged to hit the Tour Tampa Bay Architecture website to download maps, pictures and location information of the QR Codes before starting the tour.
And if you there to enjoy the tour yourself, please leave a comment about your experience and how the QR Codes worked out.
