Mobile app development can be a painstaking and expensive process if done wrong. This is why it is always important to plan ahead of time before you plunge head first into mobile app development.

Something new or something better?

Great apps help users perform a task easier or offer them a deal of convenience. In short, they solve a problem for its users. If you have a great idea that has never been done before, then go ahead and develop that idea into an app. However, this would be very difficult to accomplish because with thousands of apps out there, there are only a few things that are left untouched. So what do you do? Think of what app functionality would be most beneficial to your business, then look at existing apps and see what could be done to improve on these.

Priceless: Expensive or free?

Another way to get your mobile app noticed is to offer it for free. Let users download and install your app without any charge. You could still monetize your app with ads, or treat it as a marketing expense that would help you get top of mind recall for your business.

What’s your marketing plan?

Before you start creating your app and mapping out its features, make sure that you have a solid marketing plan in place. How do you promote your app once it is finished? How does your app add to the bottom line? How will you measure its success?

You simply cannot create an app and put it live on the App Store or Android Market hoping that people would find it.

What features should you include?

There are a lot of things that you could with your app. Features and functionality are only limited by your imagination or budget.

However, there are some that are high on people’s wish list of features they want to see in a mobile app.

Go company-specific. If you are going to create an app to help you promote your business, why not make it more company specific. Give your app users a convenient way to get discounts or deals from your app. Or perhaps, you could make it easier for them to contact you. Give your potential customer directions to your nearest outlet.

Mobile payments. Think about allowing your customers to pay with their mobile phones, or shop using your app.

Help them connect. You might also want to include a functionality that allows them to post your content, site, apps, scores or just about anything from your app to their Facebook or Twitter accounts.
