People’s been going crazy with creativity these days with QR Codes being placed on food, rooftops, homes, billboards and not to mention the number of THINGS that they use to create QR Codes. Some of you must have read about QR Codes being created with sand on beaches, I assume.
Anyway, Volswagen just upped the ante by creating a QR Code out of crates of oranges. Yes, you have heard right. We found a video of a VW commercial that promoted their Crafter commercial vans that featured a huge QR Code. The commercial wasn’t a promotion of sorts but more of an awareness campaign. The commercial merely aimed at reminding people that the vehicles exists and serves as a good branding exercise. It showed that the company wasn’t slowing down on their marketing and that they are very much in the game and in the know about QR Codes (since everyone else has been using it on their marketing and promotional campaigns since last year).
The commercial wasn’t run in North America but it was, instead, ran in Mexico. But since the commercial did not use a general language, it could very well appear in many other parts of the world, regardless of language. And who needs language when you have a powerful message and a large QR Code.
The QR Code was created in a large wholesale market in downtown Mexico City. The crates of oranges DID NOT go to waste, for your information, because after filming the creation of the QR Code, the crates of oranges were then reloaded into the real VW Crafter vans and went on their distribution rounds. As you can see, the vans used are the very ones that were being advertised about in the commercial.
On top of it being a rebranding exercise, it also showed and reassured views of the commercial about how many crates the vans can hold and distribute.
We are unsure about how successful the commercial was in Mexico but there were some complaints about the format of the commercial. If you are interested or know something about where the problem is, please do share it with us in the comments section below. In the meantime, here is a video of the said commercial.
