First, can you imagine 5.3 million scans for June 2012 alone? This is a record number of scans recorded in a single month!
Further, ScanLife revealed that there were about 120 QR codes being scanned every minute during the second quarter of the year. That is almost six times the 24 codes scanned per minute in the same period in 2011.
If you are wondering how many people scanned their first QR codes in the quarter, then ScanLife also has the answer for you: 4 million. Yes, that is right 4 million people are no longer QR code virgins.
People are scanning QR codes put out there by big brands. The biggest campaign in the second quarter of this year garnered over 2 million scans, a far cry from only 30,000 scans in 2011. If you are looking for the best type of content for you, keep in mind that QR codes for loyalty programs or those that lead people to contests are the biggest drawers for the period. Other top content include app downloads, social media and video content.
People scanning QR codes tend to be older than 25 years old. In fact, 3 out of 4 people who scanned a QR code during the quarter were 25 years old or older. Close to 7 out of 10 were male.
People using Android smartphones represent 53% of the scanners while those using iOS represent 43% of the scans.
Toy companies are finding the most success with QR code campaigns, followed by:
- Health and Beauty
- Fast food joints
Scanlife used data for both ordinary barcodes and QR codes. They also included codes that were created using their platform and other third party QR code generators.
