Pink Lady Goes Mobile and Uses QR Codes for Social Media Program

In the fruit industry, Pink Lady America is considered to be a pioneer when it comes to the use of social media. More specifically, it was among the first to employ social media sites Facebook and Twitter as part of its marketing efforts.

Now, PLA is moving along and has gone mobile in its aim to be more personally accessible to millions of customers. Pink Lady Brand Apple Lovers can now connect with PLA through its mobile website and its quick response codes.

For those not familiar, the Pink Lady Brand Apple was developed in Western Australia over 30 years ago as a natural cross between Golden Delicious and Lady Williams. This is the first apple with a trademark and has since become an international favorite. The Pink Lady Brand Apple is also now well established in of many retail food stores in various regions, North America being just one of them. Over three million boxes of these apples are grown in Washington State, while around 150,000 boxes are grown in California.

PLA is taking advantage of the quality or characteristics of its apples in its move to provide consumers with more information about its products and about how to use them. Particularly, PLA has been promoting its apples’ quality advantages, like their unique sweet and tart flavor, their crisp texture, and their slow browning when cut.

According to the company’s marketing director, Alan Taylor, they will now be focusing on their apples’ role in high-end desserts and main dishes, and not just on their apples as fresh out-of-hand snacks. And PLA’s QR codes and mobile website will play a very significant role in getting the word out to its customers, he says.

Taylor explains that they need the QR codes and contact information on POS (point-of-sale) materials as they don’t have the budget to launch an advertising campaign that promotes their social media elements. They will thus be relying on shippers, marketers and others in the produce industry to spread the word about PLA’s efforts and to help them accomplish their objective.
