Although in some parts of Asia, the use of QR Code has been popular, this is not the case in Jakarta. A leading Jakarta-based media company announced the use of the technology as an advertising medium. This is a first for the entertainment industry in Indonesia as well and they used it to promote the Indonesian movie ‘Merah Putih’, roughly translated to be Red White which is a film about Indonesian War of Independence. The Indonesian flag consist of both colors and that is what the movie is about.
The movie was released close to the date of the country’s Independence Day on the August 13th this year to mark the country’s 64th Independence Day.
The QR Code was widely printed on posters, releases, brochure hand-outs and advertisements by the advertising company. It allowed smart phone users access into the online web pages designed for people who were interested in finding out more about the movie, behind-the-scene looks, bios of the actors. The QR Code can be scanned with a cell phone’s camera and decoded with the use of a suitable QR Code scanner. When scanned, the QR Code let interested viewers a glimpse into the movie’s details which includes interacting through a commentary box right there and then on their cell phone.
The CEO of CCDO Indonesia proudly said that they are glad and immensely pleased to be the first in the country to make use of this technology. He said that they are happy to be the first to integrate media with its digital counterpart in such a unique way.
We do not have the figures but apparently, the campaign was a hugely successful one which drove throngs of people into the mobile web pages online which generated a new interest in how the QR Code technology worked. The giant media company is excited to push forth this new medium and is going to help push forward this idea with other clients.
