Cup ‘o’ Joe, one of the biggest coffee house chains in Israel, is using QR codes to give away free coffee. Cup ‘o’ Joe launched its latest advertising that involved newspaper ads with the QR codes on them.
Readers can scan the QR codes and get the coupons for free coffee. People who get the coupon can then go to any Cup ‘o’ Joe location and exchange these coupons for free coffee.
Cup ‘o’ Joe says that they think that the QR code is a natural choice for their campaigns because people would like to sip coffee while reading the paper. What’s more, they are hoping that the promotion would help people build the habit to read the paper while drinking coffee — their blends, preferably.
What’s new with the Cup ‘o’ Joe QR code?
Most QR code coupons are static. Meaning, when you scan the QR code, it takes you to a website where the coupons are or you could download an image file directly to your phone.
Cup ‘o’ Joe takes it a step further by adding location to the scans. When you scan a QR code, your phone’s GPS features are activated and you are directed to the nearest Cup ‘o’ Joe location, including its full address and a Google Map showing the fastest route to the store from where you are. This makes it even more convenient to redeem the coupons.
BeQRious thinks that this is an ingenious use of both QR codes and mobile capabilities. Cup ‘o’ Joe took a look at what could be done with a mobile phone and takes advantage of it to make their campaign even more useful for their customers. A lot of companies give out coupons and deals via a QR code, but Cup ‘o’ Joe shows you how to redeem your coupons conveniently and quickly. Because GPS is available on most smartphones, the content they serve up makes sense and adds to the experience in a positive way.
