We have heard about several large-scale quick response codes vying for world record. Now, the Guinness website has finally confirmed that the one created by Hackerspace Charlotte on a rooftop in NoDa is the largest of its kind.
Each of the code’s sides measure 100 feet and it takes up a total area of 934.62 square meters, with the pixels covering an estimated one square meter each. It can be seen from Google Maps’ satellite and can be seen by people in airplanes flying to and from the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.
The Guinness World Records has already verified the size of the QR code and has already officially announced that it is the biggest one in the world, replacing Fiera Bolzano Spa’s QR code in Italy. The former world record holder measures only 16.81 square meters.
Hackerspace is using the QR code as a form of mobile marketing. The NoDa QR code has been tested and proven to work with the use of a mobile device equipped with a QR code reader application. People who scan the large code will be taken to a website that was created especially for the project. The QR code aimed to generate a little more web traffic for both Hackerspace and Southern Resources.
The Charlotte City Council has also given the Hackerspace team that designed and painted the QR code recognition on April 9, 2012.
Hackerspace Charlotte is a non-profit, open technology lab that offers individuals who are interested in working on innovative projects a venue to meet and complete their work. Southern Resources, which is a scrap metal recycler, donated its roof space to Hackerspace for the painting and display of the QR code.
