Grab Last Minute Valentine’s Day Gifts In The Subway With Paypal

Forgotten to buy a Valentine’s Day Gift? STILL have no clue what to get for your special someone? Well, if you are in the train somewhere in Singapore, Paypal’s got the solution for you.

So, Valentine’s day is here and what are you guys (otherwise also proudly known as geeks) thinking of doing with your loved ones or friends? I am thinking of celebrating love by pampering my devices with discounted stuff available on Gameloft. If your other half is just as into games as you are, why not take advantage of the Valentine’s day special as well? The prices for some of their games are gonna be halved or dropped to $0.99 per game.

On a more serious note, it looks like Paypal Singapore is getting serious about shopping with a QR Code. In a bold, sweeping move, knowing that more than half of the citizens are already on to a smartphone or in transition to newer generation cell phones, Paypal placed fifteen billboards and ads at subway stations (Singaporeans are much like New Yorkers and Hong Kong citizens, the subway is everything when it comes to mobility) to encourage people to buy last minute Valentine’s day gifts for their loved ones. They can do it by simply scanning the code, head over to the Paypal shop and pay for it there and then.

On last check, it seems that consumers and commuters who are in a bind about what to get at the very last mile of the journey can buy stuff like chocolates, perfume, flowers, spa treatments, books, tickets and many other Valentine’s day related items off the company’s web store.

Reps from the company had said that they are confident about the venture because of their experience in delving in mobile commerce and they intend to fully put in full swing the concept of digital wallet for Singaporeans. It is, as it was also said, a much safer way to pay for stuff online and placing them in train stations means that they can simply ‘grab stuff’ on their way home and during the wait time.

This is not Paypal’s first time dealing with mobile commerce (of course) because they did a smaller scale version of it for Christmas. In many parts of Asia, QR Codes is a common sight. Tesco did it and according to reports, the marketing campaign was a successful one.

At this point, I don’t think the question about whether QR Codes are a fad or here to say is in contention anymore.
