Remember the 1988 movie, “They Live?” That John Carpenter sci-fi horror film that also had a touch of politics in it? A new film titled “Branded” is making its own version of They Live, which is set in the future where all of humankind is controlled by corporate brands, which in turn is being controlled by an alien. The trailers have just been released and it featured a whole lot of QR codes.
There may be a dozen or so of QR codes but it seems that they all lead to the subpage of the movie’s official home page at http://brandedmovie.com/code11/. The page right now just shows a countdown to June 25. So what is going to happen on June 25? It will be the day when the next layer of conspiracy is going to be revealed. If you find this interesting, you can give your e-mail address to be automatically notified.
As for the website, there is nothing much on it there yet. The movie itself would not open until September 7. However, you can watch the trailer on the site, or if you choose to, you can scan another QR code and watch the trailer on your mobile device.
You can also sign up to be instantly notified when new codes are revealed on the site.
Is this a good marketing scheme? We think it is. For one, if we are going to base it from the site, it seems that the filmmakers are bent on keeping much of what the movie is about a secret. The QR codes are very effective in enforcing this mystery and intrigue. What’s more, moviegoers are encouraged to leave their e-mail addresses, which the moviemakers could use to get in touch with a captured audience. Instead of just forgetting about the movie when they leave, they get to leave their e-mail addresses. They would get information about the movie right in their inboxes and over time, they would get reminders about the movie. It is a great way to build a buzz about the movie too.
